The Ottava , also called Octava, Oittava or Outava, was a Brazilian-Portuguese measure of weight and volume and corresponded to the eighth.

  • 1 Ottava = 3 Denari = 72 Grani = 3 ⅞ grams
  • 8 Ottavas = 1 onca
  • 96 Ottavas = 1 lira
  • 2400 Ottavas = 1 rubbo

Gold and silver weight

Portugal and Brazil

In Portugal and Brazil , the measure was also a gold and silver weight.

  • 8 Ottavas = 1 onca
  • 64 Ottavas = Marco
  • 128 Ottavas = 1 arratel / pound
  • 1 Ottava = 3 Escrupulos = 72 Granos

Italy

In Italy it was used as a test weight for gold.

    • 192 Ottavas = 1 Libra scarsa
  • Florence 1 Ottava = 1 7/9 grams

Gemstone weight

In Brazil and Portugal it was also a gem weight.
