Ottmar Zieher

Ottmar Zieher (born August 7, 1857 in Schwäbisch Gmünd , † November 27, 1924 in Munich ) was a German publisher of postcards .

Company history

In 1880 he started a company as a "paper and envelope dealer" at Damenstiftstrasse 6 in Munich. He then opened a stationery shop and a manufacture for jewelry goods in Sendlinger Straße 1. In 1889 he started a paper shop at Pfisterstraße 6, which was expanded in 1890 to include a stationery shop. Then in 1892/93 the “Kunstverlagsanstalt” followed in Hofstatt 6 / I. In the period between 1890 and 1895 he made business contacts in Leipzig, including the artist Arthur Thiele . In 1900 the entry in the commercial register was changed to “Postcard puller Ottmar, Kunst- und Verlagsanstalt, Munich-Leipzig, Hofstatt 6 / I, Munich; Postcard production of all kinds; Specialty: artist postcards ”. Zieher supported aspiring graphic designers with orders and as a patron . Well-known illustrators for his postcards were Paul Hey , Zeno Diemer and Heinrich Kley .

The publisher also produced portrait cards of Bavarian and Belgian heads of state and thus became purveyor to the court of His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Belgium . The printing jobs were mainly carried out by Leipzig companies. After his death, the management of the company went to his eldest son, Ottmar Zieher Jr., who was born in 1883. about, who died in 1952, after which the company was subsequently dissolved.

He and his wife Emilie, née Widmann, had two sons:

  • Franz Joseph Zieher (born August 14, 1892 - † January 26, 1968)
