Otto-Julius Stark (also Otto J. Stark ; born August 17, 1913 in Überlingen , † June 2, 2003 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German zoologist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Stark studied zoology , chemistry and geology at the University of Freiburg . During his studies in 1933 he became a member of the KDSt.V. Wildenstein Freiburg im Breisgau in the CV . During the Second World War , Stark was an air force officer in the Wehrmacht. He was a bearer of the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. In 1940 he was shot down over England and was taken prisoner of war in Canada until 1946 .

After the end of the war he returned to Freiburg and continued his scientific career at the University of Freiburg at the Department of Zoology (later Institute for Biology I ). 1949 Otto Stärk was with a study on amphibians doctorate . He completed his habilitation in 1957 and was appointed professor of zoology.

The classical philologist Ekkehard Stark (1958-2001) was one of his two sons.

Act

The focus of his scientific work was cell research and the occurrence of birds and mammals in Europe.

Due to his university career, Otto Stark had been a specialist on the board of the Baden Hunting Association since 1952 and a member of the German Small Game Committee in Bonn since 1968. In addition, he was editor of the magazine Zielfernrohr.

In addition to these scientific commitments, Otto Stark worked for decades as a liaison lecturer and advisor to the German National Academic Foundation .

After his retirement he worked in the charitable area for the Malteser Relief Service . Due to his work for the Order of Malta , he became Magistral Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta in 1977. Even after that, he continued to be involved in the Order of Malta. From 1978 to 1987 he was head of the diocesan organization of the Malteserhilfsdienst.
