The Otto-Kandler-Haus is a refuge of the St. Pölten section of the ÖAV on the summit of the 1195 m high Hohenstein of the Türnitz Alps . The hut, located between the Pielachtal and Traisental, is open from May to October on weekends and public holidays.

The hut is located on the Mariazeller pilgrimage route in Lower Austria (long-distance hiking trail 06) and is the base of the Traisental circular hiking trail 655 .

history

The Otto Kandler House was built in 1905 by the “Alpine Society D 'Ennsecker” from Vienna, named after a distinguished functionary of the association, and in the early 1930s, according to other sources, an extension was added. In 1952, the "Ennsecker" gave up the care and administration of the hut and the associated network of paths to the St. Pölten section of the PES, as they were no longer able to do so due to the tendency towards dissolution. The story of the “Ennsecker” as alpine pioneers on the Hohenstein finally ended in 1955 with the sale of the Otto Kandler house to the St. Pölten section.

In the 1980s, a forest road was built by the landowner Stift Lilienfeld ; this created a possibility of access from the valley town of Schrambach and this made the supply of the hut much easier. In 1987 (renewed in 2014/15) what was then "NEWAG" (today's EVN ) built a photovoltaic system that still exists today in the course of a test project , which ensured an independent power supply for the hut.

From 2002, the 55 km network of paths leading to the Otto Kandler House was completely renovated and, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the Otto Kandler House in 2005, the “forecourt” of the hut was also renovated or redesigned.
