Otto Brefin (born December 31, 1894 or 1899 ; † May 22, 1950 in Berlin ) was a Swiss stage actor with a few excursions to German film.

Live and act

The son of a teacher and musician probably received his artistic training in Leipzig with Adolf Winds shortly after the end of the First World War and made his debut at the local theater in 1919. Following this, Brefin went to the Bonn City Theater and then to the Hamburger Kammerspiele. Once in Berlin, Otto Brefin could be seen at the Saltenburg Theaters, the Prussian State Theater and the German Theater, among other places. At the Great Theater of the Reich capital, the Basel artist was particularly successful with the scooter in Schiller's Die Räuber . His career breakthrough came late after Otto Falckenberg signed him to the Kammerspiele in Munich. Brefin was also allowed to direct here.

Up to this time Otto Brefin also worked with small roles in three Reich German films. The increasing bombardment of German targets made Brefin temporarily return to Switzerland in 1943. There he was seen in Basel, Zurich and Lucerne theaters, and he also staged one or the other theater piece. After the end of the war, Brefin returned to the devastated West Germany and found work in Stuttgart, Munich and Wuppertal venues. At the municipal theaters of the latter city he was seen in the world premiere of Georg Kaiser Napoleon in New Orleans and as Siegfried in the Giraudoux play of the same name. In addition, he was able to continue staging plays, including Goethe's Clavigo , Scribes Das Glas Wasser and Hauptmann's Die Ratten . Otto Brefin died surprisingly of the consequences of a pulmonary embolism .
