Life

Artbauer grew up in Vienna and studied at the university there . According to his own statement, it was Karl May's novels on the Orient that motivated him to become a researcher himself.

Since 1902 he made trips to Turkey , Syria and Mesopotamia , Arabia , Sudan and Morocco as well as other countries in North Africa . He carried out these trips partly on his own initiative, partly on behalf of scientific societies.

Artbauer published the results of his travels in the form of lectures and specialist publications as well as, intended for a broader readership, in travel reports . In addition, he worked his experiences into short stories and novels. He illustrated many of his books and magazine articles with photos he took himself and interspersed voice samples that give his works the impression of authenticity . It is believed that Artbauer fell in the Balkans during the First World War.
