Otto Dreyer (theologian)

Otto Dreyer (born December 4, 1837 in Hamburg ; † May 4, 1900 in Meiningen ) was a Protestant theologian.

Life

Dreyer studied theology at the universities of Halle , Heidelberg and Göttingen from 1857 to 1861 after attending the upper school of Gothaer Gymnasium . During his studies he became a member of the Hallenser in 1857 , of the Heidelberg Wingolf in 1858 , and of the Germania Göttingen fraternity in 1860 , which until 1864 also belonged to the Wingolfsbund , but today (since 1893) the Schwarzburgbund . After studying theology, he was employed as a teacher in Altona and Hamburg from 1861 to 1863, and in 1863 as a deacon and pastor at the Frankenberg Hospital in Gotha.

In 1875 he became the first pastor in St. Augustin and in 1882 superintendent . In 1887 he received his doctorate from the University of Jena. theol. hc, in 1891 he moved to Meiningen as senior church councilor .

The sermons, writings and essays of the theologian, who was influenced by Friedrich Schleiermacher , found widespread use in German-speaking countries at the end of the 19th century.

Honors

On April 15, 1891 Dreyer was given honorary citizenship of the city of Gotha on the occasion of his departure to Meiningen. Since 2000, Otto-Dreyer-Strasse in the western part of the city named after him has also commemorated the theologian.
