Otto Fahr (born August 19, 1892 in Cannstatt , † February 28, 1969 in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt) was a German swimmer and entrepreneur.

Career

Sports

Otto Fahr competed for SV Cannstatt . In 1911 he won the titles over 1500 meters freestyle and over 100 meters back at the German Swimming Championships . In April 1912 Fahr set two world records in Magdeburg: he swam over 100 meters back in 1: 15.6 minutes, over 200 meters in 2: 48.4 minutes; the 100-meter world record lasted until 1920, the 200-meter world record until 1926.

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, only the 100-meter back stretch was on the program. Fahr competed as a world record holder, but lost both in the semifinals and in the final to the American Harry Hebner and thus won the silver medal in front of the second German swimmer Paul Kellner .

Otto Fahr studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart , where he also became a member of the Ghibellinia fraternity in Stuttgart. After serving as a lieutenant in World War I , he completed his studies in 1919 and then received his doctorate. In 1921 he moved from the United Ball Bearing Factory Norma to the mechanical engineering company Werner & Pfleiderer . In 1926 he received power of attorney , from 1931 he was a member of the management team, which he headed from 1940. Since 1935 he was a silent partner in the limited partnership . Otto Fahr was a member of the NSDAP and Wehrwirtschaftsführer , but maintained connections with the circle around Carl Friedrich Goerdeler at least during the Second World War . In 1945 Fahr was one of the Stuttgart entrepreneurs who worked to ensure that the National Socialists did not destroy all companies in the Stuttgart area. In the Spruchkammer proceedings in 1948 Fahr was classified as not contaminated because of active resistance. It was not until 1968 that Otto Fahr left the company management and became Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Honors

In 1952 Fahr was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1968 the Great Cross of Merit with a Star and the Great Silver Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria .

In honor of its first world-class swimmer, SV Cannstatt organizes the Dr. Otto Fahr Memorial Swimming every year. This takes place in December in the Sindelfingen swimming center .
