Otto Emil Freytag (born September 14, 1835 in Plauen , † November 16, 1917 in Leipzig ) was a German lawyer and social democratic politician. He was the first social democratic member of the state parliament in the Kingdom of Saxony .

Live and act

From 1855 to 1858 Otto Freytag studied law in Leipzig. Freytag was one of the founding members of the Landsmannschaft Plavia Leipzig and was also an honorary member. Between 1863 and 1865 he was mayor of Adorf in Vogtland . He then settled in Leipzig as a lawyer.

In 1866 he was a co-founder and committee member of the Saxon People's Party , and from 1867 to 1869 a board member of the Association of German Workers' Associations. In 1868 he also co-founded the " Democratic Weekly ".

In 1872 Freytag together with his brother Bernhard Freytag defended August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht and Adolf Hepner in the Leipzig high treason trial .

Freytag was a member of the Second Saxon Chamber from 1877 to 1882; from 1878 he was significantly involved in the organization of the resistance against the socialist law . In 1879 he was co-founder and initially chairman of the "Training Association for Workers". He was a member of parliament until 1883.
