Otto Hänssgen

Otto Hänssgen (born March 24, 1885 in Hassenhausen , † February 23, 1956 in Rethen ) was a German painter .

Life

education

At the turn of the century Otto Hänssgen completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Bad Kösen and was then employed as a painter in Hanover . This position was followed by several years of wandering, during which he spent some time in Berlin , Husum , Elmshorn , Hamburg , Kattowitz and Jüterbog . During his wanderings he studied at various arts and crafts schools.

Times of war

Hänssgen did his military service in Verden between 1907 and 1909 . After his military service, he first settled in Langenhagen and in 1913 opened a painting business as an independent craftsman. In 1914 he was drafted back into military service and fought on the fronts in France and Russia during the First World War .

After the First World War he settled in Rethen and reopened a painting business. Due to the economic constraints of the interwar period, he was only able to be artistically active at times. He spent most of the Second World War in Rethen and was only drafted as a soldier for a short time. After the war he stayed in Rethen where he died in 1956.

Act

His first works were created during his military service in Verden. During this time he created a number of impressive portrait studies and landscapes. Hänssgen had his second major creative phase during the First World War. In his pictures, especially portraits and landscapes, he tried to process the horrors of war. Many of his works were also created after the Second World War, which he spent in Rethen. In addition, he worked intensively on the renovation of the village church in Rethen.
