Prof. Dr. Otto Hermann Pesch

Otto Hermann Pesch (born October 8, 1931 in Cologne ; † September 8, 2014 ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1952, Otto Hermann Pesch studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the then Philosophical-Theological University of the Dominicans in Walberberg and at the University of Munich . In 1958 he was ordained a priest. In 1965 he became a lecturer in Walberberg. He did his doctorate at the University of Munich under Heinrich Fries on the subject of theology of justification under Martin Luther and Thomas von Aquin: attempting a systematic-theological dialogue . In 1972 he left the Dominican Order and married. From 1975 to 1998 he was a Roman Catholic theologian and held a professorship for systematic theology at the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Hamburg. Pesch was particularly committed to ecumenism and urged progress in this area. He was a corresponding member of the Ecumenical Working Group of Protestant and Catholic Theologians and one of the few Catholic Luther researchers today.

His main research interests were Luther and other Reformation theologians on the one hand, and medieval theology on the other, for example Thomas Aquinas . In 2008 he reached a certain public with his proposal to completely “rehabilitate” the father of the Evangelical Church , Martin Luther, from a Catholic perspective on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation year (2017) .

The Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Jena awarded Pesch an honorary doctorate for his achievements in Luther research in 2008 .
