Otto Kraemer (born July 25, 1900 in Bingen , † February 25, 1986 in Karlsruhe ) was a German mechanical engineer and professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe .

Life

Otto Kraemer was born as the son of high school professor Joseph Hans Kraemer (1872–1963) and attended today's Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in Mainz. After a short military service at the end of the First World War , he studied general mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt with a degree in engineering in 1923. His first position was at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard in Bremen- Vegesack , where he was the design office for seven years Ship engines headed. From 1930 to 1934 he was head of the mechanical engineering department of the WARIED tanker shipping company in Hamburg.

In 1934 he was appointed full professor to the chair for piston engines and steam boilers at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, which he held until his retirement in 1968. In all these years he was also in charge of the Karlsruhe University Association (today the Karlsruhe University Society). Since 1938 the subject of transmission engineering was attached to his chair . His lectures covered the areas of internal combustion engines, steam piston engines, transmission theory, vibration theory and control engineering. For the latter, he can be seen as a pioneer of a special science that has since been greatly developed.

During the war years from 1940 to 1945 he was appointed head of naval torpedo development at the Eckernförde torpedo testing facility.

Otto Kraemer was not only known as a researcher and teacher, but also as a philosopher and artist who dealt with the problem of man and technology in many essays and lectures , in which he tried to find an answer between belief in progress and pessimism in culture. The well-attended Rose Monday lectures, which expressed Kraemer's humorous personality, are unforgettable at the university.

He devoted his artistic inclination mainly to shadow play , whose theater and characters he designed and produced himself and whose texts for numerous pieces (e.g. Doctor Faust) he wrote himself. Since 1925 he has been involved, partly in leading positions, as a member of the Schlaraffia , a gentlemen's society for the care of art, humor and friendship.

Otto Kraemer married Lisbeth born in 1929. Fast and had six sons.
