Otto May (agronomist)

Otto May (born July 6, 1833 in Würzburg , † April 3, 1914 in Munich ) was an estate inspector , long-time General Secretary of the Agricultural Association in Bavaria and honorary professor at the agricultural department of the Technical University of Munich .

Live and act

Otto May studied natural sciences at the Technical University in Munich and worked for several months in 1854 as a research assistant at the Agricultural Central School in Weihenstephan . From 1855 he was administrator and from 1857 inspector of several larger estates. In 1863 he took over a position as main teacher at the district arable farming school in Bayreuth . In 1879 he was elected General Secretary of the Agricultural Association in Bavaria. From 1879 to 1895 he edited the "Zeitschrift des Landwirtschaftlichen Verein in Bayern" and from 1896 the "Vierteljahresschrift des Bayerischen Landwirtschaftsrat".

May sustainably promoted the agricultural associations and cooperatives in Bavaria and organized agricultural exhibitions. He was a popular speaker at meetings and for decades was considered a "thoroughbred agronomist" in Bavaria. Due to his extensive knowledge in the fields of natural sciences and his many years of experience in practical agriculture, he was appointed honorary professor at the agricultural department of the Technical University of Munich in 1879 . Until his death he held lectures there on " Special Crop Production ". In 1909 he was awarded the title of Councilor for his outstanding services to Bavarian agriculture .
