Otto Mayrhofer - later Otto Mayrhofer-Krammel - (born November 2, 1920 in Vienna ) is an Austrian anesthetist and professor at the University of Vienna .

Mayrhofer studied medicine at the University of Vienna with his doctorate in 1944, while at the same time doing military service. From 1946 he was at the 2nd Surgical University Clinic in Vienna and, after spending six months in Great Britain, specialized in anesthesiology, completing his training in the USA in 1949/50. He was also one of those who founded the Austrian Society for Anesthesiology in 1951 and in 1952 achieved recognition of anesthesia as an independent subject in Austria, as had little before happened in the Anglo-Saxon countries. Mayrhofer became a lecturer, in 1961 associate professor and head of the newly founded Institute for Anesthesiology at the University of Vienna. In 1967 it became a full professorial office (anesthesiology and general intensive care medicine). In 1991 he retired.

Mayrhofer is co-editor of the first German-language anesthesia textbook, which was first published in 1955.

In 1952 he was co-founder and co-editor (with Rudolf Frey , Werner Hügin ) of the journal Der Anästhesist , which was published by Springer-Verlag. In 1972 he was elected President of the World Federation of Anesthesia Societies in Kyoto for four years.

In 1985 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . He is an honorary member of numerous specialist societies for anesthesia, a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, multiple honorary doctorates (Szeged, Reims, Poznań) and received the Golden Medal of Honor of the City of Vienna, the Great Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art.
