history

In 1980 Otto founded Otto Reisen GmbH, which offered Otto customers tourist services via catalog. The Otto Reisen brand, which was initially operated as a profit center , marked the entry of Otto-Versand into the tourism business.

In 1993 Otto Reisen GmbH was incorporated into the tourism holding company Otto Freizeit und Touristik GmbH (hereinafter OFT), which was newly founded by Otto Versand. This also included the majority stake in the travel agency chain Reiseland acquired by Otto Versand in the same year. In 1999 the online portal otto-reisen.de was founded.

By 2000 Otto Versand took over the majority stake in KG Travel Overland Flugreisen GmbH & Co (hereinafter Travel Overland) and founded the tour operator Hermes Touristik and the online travel agency travelchannel.de, the latter together with Gruner + Jahr .

In 2001 OFT brought its now one hundred percent participation in Travel Overland into a joint venture with the then largest online travel provider travelocity.com, which operated under the umbrella brand "Travelocity Europe". Due to differing views on the further strategic direction of the joint venture, it was decided that OFT will initially sell its share in the European activities to travelocity.com in 2004. The OFT then bought back the share of travelocity.com in Travel Overland. From now on, it operated independently the online activities of Travelchannel.de, Travel Overland, Flug.de and otto-reisen.de.

In 2011, Otto Versand, which has now been renamed Otto, focused more strongly on its core business in retail. In the course of this, 49 percent of the OFT shares were sold to VR Meine Raiffeisenbank Altötting-Mühldorf. In 2012, OFT sold the portals Flug.de, Travel Overland and Travelchannel.de to Travelviva. Otto-reisen.de remained with the OFT as a portal for package and holiday trips.

In 2014 Raiffeisenbank Altötting took over the remaining 51 percent of OFT, which became a wholly-owned subsidiary of RT / Raiffeisen Touristik Group GmbH. In the same year, the Egyptian hotel investor Samih Sawiris bought a 74.9 percent stake in RT / Raiffeisen Touristik Group GmbH. In 2015 OFT was renamed Reiseland Holding. Otto Reisen, now a brand of Reiseland Holding GmbH, operates a travel agency in Hamburg's Alstercity and the online portal www.otto-reisen.de. In parallel to the online portal, OTTO Reisen offers customer advice over the phone.
