Otto Schaaf

Otto Schaaf (* 25. June 1956 in Hagen ) is a German civil engineer with water economic focus. Since 2006 he has been a board member of the Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln (StEB), from 2007 to the end of 2018 President of the German Association for Water Management, Sewage and Waste . V. (DWA).

Life

Schaaf studied civil engineering at RWTH Aachen University from 1976 to 1982 . He then completed the technical traineeship in the field of urban construction in North Rhine-Westphalia and graduated in 1984 with the state examination as building assessor.

Schaaf began his professional activity in 1985 in Ludwigshafen. In the city administration, he took over the management of the city drainage department, which later became the city's own operation. In 1990 he moved to the city drainage office in Cologne. Here he held leading positions in the areas of sewerage and sewage treatment , flood protection and water maintenance. In 2006 Otto Schaaf was appointed to the board of the Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln, which is now an institution under public law (AöR), a municipal company with around 650 employees.

Otto Schaaf lives in Hürth near Cologne, is married and has two daughters.

Otto Schaaf is also active outside of his professional work. On the initiative of the StEB and in particular Otto Schaaf, the Cologne Water School was established as a cooperation with the two partners RheinEnergie AG and Wasserforum Köln e. V. founded.

Schaaf also works on a voluntary basis in specialist and management committees of the German Association for Water Management, Wastewater and Waste e. V. (DWA) with. For ten years he was chairman of the DWA main committee “Drainage Systems”. During this time he got involved in European standardization work, among other things. For the DWA, he worked at the European Standardization Institute (CEN) in the Technical Committee 165 “Wastewater Technology” and in the working group 22 “Drainage systems outside of buildings”.

Otto Schaaf has been a member of the DWA Presidium since January 1, 2000. Within the Presidium, he headed the DWA Honors Commission for several years until he was elected President of the DWA on January 1, 2007. During his presidency, the DWA policy advice was set up. The opening of the DWA Berlin office in June 2007 and the DWA federal conference, which has been taking place every two years in Berlin since 2011, are visible signs of this. In particular, he maintains the cooperation with the sister associations in Austria and Switzerland.

In addition to his voluntary work in the DWA, Otto Schaaf performs managerial tasks at the German Association of Cities (DST), the Alliance of Public Water Management (AöW), the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU), the Flood Competence Center, the Cologne Water Forum and the quality protection of sewer construction.

At the Society for the Promotion of Abwassertechnik e. V. (GFA), a service company of DWA, is Schaaf's chairman of the board and publishes, among other things, the water management-relevant magazines KA-Korrespondenz Abfall & Abwasser and KW-Korrespondenz Wasserwirtschaft, as well as the KA-Betriebsinfo, as well as the water information.

Schaaf is also a member of the jury for the GreenTechAwards.

Honors

Otto Schaaf was made an honorary member of the Austrian Water and Waste Management Association (ÖWAV) in 2014 for his services to water and waste management and for the cooperation between the DWA and the Austrian sister organization.
