The Association of Municipal Enterprises e. V. ( VKU ) is a German interest group that represents the interests of municipal companies vis-à-vis legislative bodies at state, federal and European level and is therefore considered a lobby association . The VKU member companies come from the fields of energy and water supply , sewage disposal, telecommunications, waste management and city cleaning.

history

It was founded in 1949 in Rüdesheim am Rhein . After the Second World War , the VKU guaranteed efficient lobbying and at the same time strengthened the efficiency of municipal companies. After the collapse of the GDR in 1989, the VKU supported many cities and municipalities in East Germany in setting up municipal companies for energy and water supply. The formerly independent association of municipal waste management and city cleaning VKS has been a department of the VKU since 2011 .

The association today

Nationwide, around 1,500 member companies with a total turnover of around 119 billion euros and more than 275,000 employees are organized in the VKU (source: VKU, as of 2020). In the end customer segment, the member companies have a market share of 61.5 percent in electricity, 66.6 percent in natural gas, 90.2 percent in drinking water, 73.7 percent in heating and 44.1 percent in Sanitation. They also dispose of 31,500 tonnes of waste every day and make a decisive contribution to Germany's 67 percent recycling rate among the member states of the European Union. They also provide broadband infrastructures to more than six million customers.

The association organizes technical and political work in the fields of energy, water and wastewater, telecommunications, as well as waste management and urban cleanliness. It takes a stand in the preparation of laws and regulations and formulates the common political positions of the VKU members and explains them to politicians and the public.

In 2007 the association moved its headquarters from Cologne to Berlin. The association has an office in Brussels and regional offices at the federal state level. The Lord Mayor of Mainz, Michael Ebling , has been President of the VKU since January 2016 . Ingbert Liebing has been the association's chief executive officer since April 2020 .

ASEW

The working group for economical use of energy and water (ASEW) was founded on September 14, 1989 from the VKU with the aim of promoting the expansion of renewable energies and better energy efficiency. With more than 270 member municipal utilities , ASEW is the largest German municipal utility network for energy efficiency and renewable energies.

The ASEW organizes around 40 events per year, the focus is on the exchange of experiences and further training in the field of the energy industry. In addition, ASEW acts as a service provider, observing and analyzing market developments and developing products and services for member companies.

ASEW offers various white label brands that are sold by member companies:

  • With the energreen brand , a green electricity product based on a surcharge model has been offered since 1999, which ensures the expansion of renewable energies on site through the earmarked surcharge. The brand is certified by the TÜV-Nord group.
  • The watergreen brand, which has been available since 2006, is also a green electricity product . In contrast to energreen , this is a dealer model with RECS proof of origin, which is sometimes controversial among consumer advocates. To u. a. To respond to this criticism, the watergreen + brand was introduced in 2012 , which is certified by the ok-power label .
  • Since 2010, ASEW has been offering its member companies a biogas product with ten percent biogas admixture under the gasgreen brand . Certification is carried out by the TÜV Nord Group.
  • The ASEW BLUE brand , which contains a climate-neutral natural gas, was last launched on the market at the beginning of 2013 . In order to achieve this goal, emissions resulting from gas consumption are offset through international climate protection projects. TÜV Rheinland is the certifier here .
