Werner Jacobi (born January 18, 1907 in Dortmund , † March 5, 1970 in Cologne ) was a German lawyer and politician of the SPD .

Life and work

Werner Jacobi was the son of the politician Wilhelm Jacobi and Rosa Jacobi geb. Illfelder . After graduating from high school, Jacobi, who was Protestant , studied law and political science. He passed the state law examination in 1931 and worked as a district judge. In 1933 he was fired by the National Socialists and lived as a commercial clerk in the metal industry. In 1937 he was arrested for preparing to commit high treason and later interned in a concentration camp from 1937 to 1945 .

In 1946 Jacobi became mayor of Iserlohn . From 1946/47 Jacobi was deputy editor-in-chief of the "Westfälische Rundschau". From 1947 to 1950 he worked as a state commissioner against corruption and administration in North Rhine-Westphalia . In this capacity he also built the I -stelle , the forerunner of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution . Then he was an alderman of the German Association of Cities . In 1955 he ran for the post of Lord Mayor of Mannheim , but was defeated by the non-party Hans Reschke . From 1956 he was chief executive of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU).

Political party

Jacobi joined the SPD in 1923. He belonged to the Hofgeismar circle around Ernst Niekisch . In 1927 he was involved in the establishment of the German Republican Student Union . In 1945 he took part in the reconstruction of the SPD and became chairman of the communal political advisory board of the SPD party executive.

MP

Jacobi was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1947 to 1950 and a member of the zone advisory board for the British zone of occupation from 1947/48 . He was a member of the German Bundestag from its first election in 1949 until his death in 1970. In 1969 he won the direct mandate in the Iserlohn constituency , after having always entered parliament via the state list of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia. He was deputy in 1952/53. Chairman of the Bundestag Committee for Local Policy and from 1953 to 1957 Chairman of the Bundestag Committee for Building and Land Law. From 1962 to 1965 and 1969 until his death he was deputy. Chairman of the Bundestag Committee for Housing, Urban Development and Regional Planning.

Public offices

In 1945 he became district administrator of the Iserlohn district . From 1946 to 1949 he was Lord Mayor of Iserlohn .

Honors

In Iserlohn a square in the city center is named after him. Werner Jacobi was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1968 .
