from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Schalk (born April 15, 1902 in Augsburg , † 1981 ) was a German resistance fighter . He fought in the Third Reich with other fighters such as B. Bebo Wager against the Nazi regime and against Adolf Hitler .

Role in resistance

Otto Schalk, son of a shepherd from the Aichach district , worked as an unskilled worker and driver in various companies after his apprenticeship as a brewer. In 1928 he became a KPD and RFB member. In 1932 and 1933 he was sentenced to several months' imprisonment for "inciting soldiers" and illicit possession of weapons. In the early 1930s, Schalk played a crucial role in the communist underground of the city of Augsburg. In May 1934 he was arrested and accused of trying to rebuild the KPD sub-district of Augsburg with help from Munich and Switzerland. He was therefore imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp until 1936 . Schalk survived this imprisonment and came back to Augsburg. He lived there in the Augsburg-Oberhausen district and joined the MAN group of the "Augsburg Revolutionary Socialists" around Wager, for which he recruited other former comrades of the KPD. After the resistance group was exposed, he was arrested on April 15 or 16, 1942 and sentenced in September 1943 by the Munich Higher Regional Court to a prison term of 2 years and 6 months.

Honors after the war

He was honored by the city of Augsburg by naming a street on the site of the former Sheridan barracks , the Sheridan area , which has been bearing his name ever since .
