Otto Schlumberger (born May 5, 1885 in Wunsiedel , Upper Franconia , † July 18, 1958 in Berlin ) was a German phytomedicist and agricultural botanist .

Life

Otto Schlumberger studied natural sciences, especially botany, at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and at the University of Munich . There he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . During his studies he became a member of the Fidelitas Karlsruhe Landsmannschaft in 1904/05 . As early as 1909 he had moved to Berlin and joined Otto Appel's research assistant at the Imperial Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry (later the Biological Reichsanstalt). In 1920 he was appointed to the government council and in 1932 to the senior government councilor. On January 1, 1946, he took over as President of the Central Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry in Berlin-Dahlem. In the same year he was appointed professor. From 1949 to 1952 he was President of the Central Biological Institute "Ost" in Kleinmachnow .

In the first decade of his activity in Berlin, Schlumberger initially worked on fungal diseases of agricultural crops, in particular potato diseases. After the First World War he played a decisive role in the development of the agricultural seed recognition . However, it owes its scientific reputation primarily to studies on the influence of mechanical damage to cultivated plants on development and yield performance. The results of his research provided an important basis for estimating crop insurance, with a particular focus on hail damage .
