Otto Hermann Eduard Schneider (born April 25, 1815 in Stralsund , † March 28, 1880 in Gotha ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Schneider, the son of a Swedish police commissioner (Pomerania belonged to Sweden until 1815), attended the Sundisches Gymnasium in his hometown Stralsund and then studied classical philology at the University of Greifswald . At the suggestion of Professor Georg Friedrich Schömann , he moved to the University of Berlin in the fall of 1836 , where he was shaped by August Boeckh and Karl Lachmann . It was also Boeckh who furthered Schneider's career: after his doctorate (1838) he accepted him as a full member of the educational seminar. Schneider spent his probationary year and first school service at the high school in Charlottenburg . In 1842, through Lachmann's mediation, he received a teaching position at the Illustre grammar school in Gotha , where he was appointed professor in 1855. Despite several offers from abroad, Schneider stayed in Gotha until the end of his life.

In May 1869 Schneider suffered a stroke while on a trip and subsequently retired. He remained active as a researcher for eleven years until he succumbed to another stroke in 1880. His estate is in the Gotha Research Library .

In philological research, Schneider emerged from various studies in Greek and Roman literature. In addition to his doctoral thesis on the Aristophanes Scholia (1838), he wrote fundamental works on the Alexandrian poets. His edition of Nikander's didactic poems (1856) and the works of Callimachos (1870–1873) remained in use for a long time before they became obsolete due to the papyrus finds of the 19th and 20th centuries. His index to the Naturalis historia of Pliny (1857-1858) was reprinted in 1967.
