Otto Volkmann (resistance fighter)

Otto Volkmann (born September 9, 1909 in Bremen , † November 20, 1936 near Madrid ) was a German resistance fighter .

Life

Otto Volkmann was the son of a carpenter. He spent his childhood and youth in the small Mecklenburg town of Parchim . After his apprenticeship as a carpenter, he joined the Fichte workers 'sports club and the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ) . After a wandering he became chairman of the local group Parchim of the SAJ and head of the children's group of the Red Falcons . Until 1933 he was a member of the Parchim city parliament.

After the National Socialists came to power and Hitler was appointed Chancellor, Otto Volkmann emigrated to France via Switzerland and Saarbrücken. Here he signed up for service in the war in Spain against the Franco regime . He was one of the first German platoon leaders of the 1st Edgar André Battalion . Otto Volkmann was fatally wounded in the battle for Madrid .

Honors

  • 1950 was in the Parchimer Flörkestr. 44 A placed a memorial stone. This is now stored at the depot of the city of Parchim.
  • In 1972 a memorial plaque was attached to the house on Auf dem Sassenhagen 8, then Otto-Volkmann-Straße, in Parchim. The plaque was removed in 1990 and is now in the city museum.
