Oumou Sangaré (born February 25, 1968 in Bamako ) is a Malian Wassoulou musician.

Career

The Wassoulou style of music is derived from traditional hunting songs; the music is accompanied by a calabash . Many of Sangare's songs are about love and marriage, especially freedom of choice in relationships. Through her lyrics she brings topics to the public that are taboos or a provocation for a Muslim country.

Her album Moussoulou was a success in West Africa . In 1995 she toured with Baaba Maal , Femi Kuti and Boukman Eksperyans . Her song Saa Magni from the album Oumou was used in Ridley Scott's 2005 film Kingdom of Heaven . He accompanied the love scene of the two main characters Balian and Sybilla.

Her album Mogoya was released in 2017 after an 8-year hiatus from the artist.
