Outeiro Maior is a place and a former municipality ( Freguesia ) in northwestern Portugal .

history

An ax from the Bronze Age was found here. Possibly it was related to the Cividade de Bagunte , a fortified settlement of the Castro culture in Bagunte . Later Roman roof tiles were also found here, so people probably lived here in the vicinity of the fortified settlement of Bagunte.

As São Martinho de Outeiro Maior , the community belonged in the Middle Ages to the Mosteiro de São Simão da Junqueira monastery , which was founded in the 11th century.

The municipality belonged to the Póvoa de Varzim district until it was incorporated into the Vila do Conde district in 1853 as part of the numerous administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1820 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg (1832-1834).

With the municipal reform in 2013 , the independent municipality of Outeiro Maior was dissolved and merged with three others to form the new municipality of Bagunte, Ferreiró, Outeiro Maior e Parada .

administration

Outeiro Maior was the seat of an independent municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vila do Conde in the district of Porto . It had an area of 4.8 km² and 369 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

In the course of the regional reform on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Bagunte , Ferreiró , Outeiro Maior and Parada were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Bagunte, Ferreiró, Outeiro Maior e Parada . Bagunte became the seat of this newly formed municipality, while the other municipal administrations remained as community citizens' offices.
