The oval carpet clam ( Timoclea ovata ) is a type of clam from the clams family (Veneridae) in the order of the Venerida .

features

The equally flared, moderately inflated case reaches a length of 19 mm. It is slightly unequal, the vertebrae are slightly in front of the center line in relation to the length of the case. Juvenile housings are rounded triangular, adult housings are more elliptical across. The heart-shaped lunula is only weakly defined with a radial line. The area is elliptical. The ligament is sunk and extends a quarter of the length of the posterior dorsal margin. The lock consists of three cardinal teeth in the right and left flaps; Lateral teeth are missing. The edge of the case is finely notched. The surface line is indented flat, the bay is rounded triangular.

The shell is thin but firm. The ornamentation consists of approx. 50 fine, radial ribs which intersect with fine concentric pits and form a grid-like pattern. The crossing points are thickened into small knots. The thin periostracum has a matt sheen. The color varies from white, yellow to beige, occasionally with reddish brown spots or streaks.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of ​​the species extends from Iceland and Northern Norway along the coasts of the Eastern Atlantic to Angola . It is also found in the Canary Islands and the Azores . It also penetrates into the North Sea and across the Mediterranean and into the Black Sea .

It lives buried in sandy or silty soils from about 4 meters to 180 meters water depth.

Taxonomy

Thomas Pennant originally introduced the taxon in 1777 under the binomial Venus ovata . Thomas Brown suggested the generic name Timoclea for this species in 1827 . The genus Timoclea is generally accepted as a valid genus.
