In the congressional elections of 1856 Jones was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Cadwalader on March 4, 1857 . At the beginning of the Civil War, Owen Jones put together a cavalry company that was part of the Union Army . Until January 1863 he took part in the war as a volunteer officer. By the time he left military service, he had made it to the rank of colonel. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on December 25, 1878 near Ardmore and was buried in Philadelphia.
