Oxo acids are a class of acid -reacting chemical compounds consisting of oxygen , hydrogen are made and at least one other element. As an acid group, they have one or more deprotonatable oxygen-hydrogen bonds. The prefix Oxo refers to the oxygen in the acid group and is in contrast to so-called hydrogen acids such as the hydrohalic acids , in which the hydrogen atom of the acid group is bound to an element other than oxygen.
In inorganic chemistry , inorganic oxo acids are also called oxygen acids .
Other meanings
In organic chemistry , the term is used as a short form for oxocarboxylic acids . The terms are not synonymous, however, as they denote different groups of substances despite the similarity of names. Oxocarboxylic acids belong to those oxo compounds in which the part of the name Oxo indicates a double bonded oxygen atom (= O) as a substituent . As carboxylic acids, they are also oxo acids due to the carboxy group they contain . Conversely, however, oxo acids are not necessarily oxo compounds or carboxylic acids.
