Oxo compounds are a class of chemical compounds that contain a doubly bonded oxygen atom (= O) to carbon or any other element. The oxo compounds include, for example, aldehydes , carboxylic acids , ketones , sulfonic acids , amides , esters and oxocarbons .

nomenclature

A doubly bonded oxygen atom is often part of an eponymous functional group with higher priority such as the carboxy group or keto group and is therefore not specifically named. In the chemical nomenclature according to the rules of the IUPAC , the part of the name Oxo- indicates a double bonded oxygen atom as a substituent that is not part of a higher priority functional group that gives it its name . This is the case, for example, with oxocarboxylic acids , which in addition to their carboxy group have a further double-bonded oxygen atom in their carbon structure.

Oxocarboxylic acids

Pyruvic acid (2-oxopropanoic acid), an oxocarboxylic acid

Carboxylic acids which contain additional aldehyde or keto groups in addition to the carboxy group are also referred to as aldehyde or keto acids . The term oxo acids is also used as a short form, but this is ambiguous since oxo acids in the broader sense do not necessarily belong to the oxo compounds.

Examples of oxocarboxylic acids are pyruvic acid , acetoacetic acid , 3-oxoglutaric acid and oxosuccinic acid .
