Páll Ísólfsson

Páll Ísólfsson (born October 12, 1893 in Stokkseyri , † November 23, 1974 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic composer, organist, teacher and conductor.

Life

The son of an organ composer himself, he began his musical training with Sigfús Einarsson in Reykjavík in 1908. In 1913 he enrolled at the Leipzig Royal Conservatory ; his teachers there were u. a. Karl Straube (organ), Robert Teichmüller (piano), Hans Grisch (music theory), and Max Reger (composition). From 1917 to 1919 Straube's assistant, he completed his musical studies in Paris with Joseph Bonnet from 1924 to 1925 . After his return to Iceland, Páll Ísólfsson played a leading role in the musical life of his homeland. So he was u. a. Director of the Reykjavík Music School from its founding in 1930 to 1957, Head of the Music Department of the Icelandic State Radio from 1930 to 1959, Organist at Dómkirkja in Reykjavík from 1939 to 1968.

He received various awards for his services; the University of Oslo awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1945 and he was accepted as a member of the Royal Swedish Music Academy Stockholm in 1956 .
