Péter Kovács (lawyer)

Péter Kovács (* 1959 in Szeged ) is a Hungarian lawyer , university professor and judge at the International Criminal Court .

Live and act

Kovács studied law at the University of Szeged from 1978 until his graduation in 1983. He then devoted himself to postgraduate studies in European and international law in Nancy and the University of Strasbourg and obtained, among other things, the Diplôme d´études supérieures européennes and the Diplôme de droit international et de droit comparé des droits de l´homme . After his return to Hungary in 1987 he was awarded a doctorate from the University of Miskolc , where he worked as a lecturer. iur. PhD. From 1990 to 1997 Kovács worked as a diplomat at the Hungarian embassy in Paris . In 1997 he completed his habilitation and has been a full professor at the University of Miskolc since 1998. At the same time he became a professor at the Péter Pázmány University in Budapest for international public law. From 1998 to 1999 he was head of the department for human rights and minority protection in the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2005 to 2014, Kovács was a judge at the Constitutional Court of Hungary . On March 11, 2015, he was appointed judge at the International Criminal Court for a generally nine-year term . There he worked in the trials against Thomas Lubanga and Germain Katanga in the Congo conflict and in the trial against Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi .
