The Pöstlingbergschlössl is a building on the Pöstlingberg in Linz , which was built as a hotel in 1898 and now houses a restaurant. The building is a listed building .

architecture

The building was built in 1898 by the Munich architects Fritz Hessemer (1868–1929) and Johannes von Schmidt and master builder Gustav Steinberger . The building complex is emphasized on the face of the city by a high tower, which is counterbalanced by a polygonal bay with a tower-like, domed roof attachment on the opposite side . The façade lying in between shows wide arched openings on the lower floors, which are accentuated on the first floor by lateral columns and parapet fields with gothic style . On the tower stepped window groups of the staircase , in between a baroque ornament field with the construction date "AD 1898". On the top floor there is a round arch opening with a deeply cut window and two parapet fields with Gothic decor. A glazed veranda on a base with stone masonry is in front of the building on two sides . The sub-assemblies around the central tower are completed by a distinctive roof landscape with gable silhouettes and roof houses . There is a fountain in the guest garden.

history

With the establishment of the Pöstlingbergbahn in 1898, the former Tramway- und Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Linz-Urfahr (TEG), forerunner of ESG or today's Linz AG , built the Pöstlingbergschlössl as a mountain railway hotel with a restaurant and a wonderful garden and opened on August 30, 1898 . The military music regularly gave concerts here to entertain the day trippers and guests.

The hotel was closed from 1945 to 1950 and was claimed by the Russian occupation forces. In 1951, the hotel and restaurant business was resumed by the operator Leopoldine Wolfinger. From 1953 to 1966 Agnes Rabeder ran the business, then Rudolf and Adolfine Maier, who acquired the building in 1969 and from then on ran it as a pure hotel. During this time, Federal President Franz Jonas was also a guest. In 1988 the hotel was closed and the building was sold to the construction company Strabag , who were planning to convert it into a seminar hotel with disruptive modern extensions, which the Federal Monuments Office prevented.

The building has been owned by the city of Linz since 1995, which had it renovated and reopened as the Pöstlingbergschlössl restaurant on May 1st, 1997 by the tenants, the Gallistl brothers. The self-service beer garden, which is open in the summer months, has not been in operation since 2016.
