Pühajärve manor

Pühajärve was first mentioned in 1376 in connection with the Uexküll estate there . The mansion was built in 1800 in the early classical style. The owners changed frequently, including those of Rehbinder , von Stackelberg , Samsonite and de Villebois-Stryk . Alexander von Schrenk lived here from 1858 to 1868 . It was replaced in 1887 by a new building in the eclectic - historicist style. In the 1920s, it was a popular vacation destination for Estonian artists and nature lovers. It was largely destroyed in the Second World War in 1944, but rebuilt as a sanatorium in 1951 . The property is surrounded by a park with numerous avenues, groups of trees and pavilions. Today's wellness center offers a panoramic view of Lake Pühajärv .

"War of Pühajärve"

Memorial stone of the so-called "War of Pühajärve"

In Pühajärve there is a stone by the Estonian artist Lembit Paluteder, inaugurated in 1971 , by a 22 m high, over 300 year old oak tree . The inscription on the boulder commemorates the so-called “Pühajärve War” ( Estonian Pühajärve sõda ) in 1841. The stone is dedicated to the Estonian peasants who launched an armed revolt against the Baltic German landlord of Pühajärve, Wilhelm von Stryk. In December 1841, 29 of them were sentenced to severe corporal punishment , some to twelve years' exile in Siberia .
