Păun-Ion Otiman (born May 28, 1942 in Gârbovăț , Caraș-Severin County ) is a Romanian agronomist and economist . He is a member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences in Bucharest, was the founding rector of the Agricultural and Veterinary University of the Banat in Timișoara and a multiple member of the Romanian Senate (1992–96 and 2000–04; PNL), in which he was chairman of the Agriculture Committee from 1992 to 1995 and chairman of the Committee on Education and Science from 2000 to 2004.

biography

Otiman attended elementary school in Gârbovăț, grammar school in Bozovici and grammar school General Dragalina in Oravi Ora. Studies at the Polytechnic University of Timișoara in Agricultural Sciences and Economics and at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest in Agricultural Economics followed and were each completed with honors. With his dissertation on management in agriculture, he was awarded a Dr. PhD. He became a lecturer (1971), assistant professor (1978) and professor (1990) at the Agricultural and Veterinary University of the Banat in Timișoara with an additional teaching obligation for doctoral students. His subject areas: management, agricultural management, economic cybernetics, information systems and agricultural policy.

Otiman has published 14 books and more than 300 specialist articles in Romanian and international journals. He was involved in a large number of national and European research projects and, as a project manager, wrote more than 20 procedural manuals. The main focus of the scientific work is:

  • Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Policy
  • Mathematical modeling of agricultural production
  • Technical and economic optimization of agricultural production
  • Economic analysis

In 1990, Otiman became the founding rector of the Agricultural and Veterinary University of the Banat, which was spun off from the Timișoara Polytechnic University. He held this position until 2004. From 1992 to 1996 he was a member of the Romanian Senate for the Convenţia Democrată Română (CDR), where he represented the Timiș County . He was Chairman of the Agriculture, Food Industry and Forestry Committee from 1992 to 1995 and one of the Senate Secretaries in 1996. In 2000 he was re-elected to the Senate for a four-year term, this time for the Partidul Național Liberal (PNL). During this legislative period, he presided over the Committee on Education and Science. He was also Vice-President of the Romanian Rectors' Conference (2000–2004), Secretary General of the Romanian Academy of Sciences (2006–2008) and Chairman of various commissions of the World Bank, universities and Romanian academies. Together with Karl Fritz Lauer , he was co-initiator of the Vojteg Agricultural School, which reopened in 2007 .

Păun Otiman is married to Prof. Diana Otiman; their son is an engineer and lecturer.
