After studying general medicine at the Charles University in Prague , Sobotka began his professional career in the surgical department of the hospital in Liberec in northern Bohemia , from where he then moved to the X-ray department after two years. There he spent the rest of his professional life. During the Velvet Revolution from the end of 1989 he began to get involved in Liberec for the citizens 'forum , from which the national-conservative and economically liberal party ODS ( Democratic Citizens' Party ) emerged, to which he belongs. From 1990 to 1996 he was on the City Council of Liberec.

In the presidential elections in January 2013, however, Sobotka received the second worst result of all candidates with just 2.46% of the vote and was therefore eliminated after the first round.
