The P'yŏngŭi Line (Korean 평의선) is a railway line in North Korea that connects Pyongyang Central Station with Sinŭiju Station . It is one of the most important railway lines in North Korea and is connected to the Shendan Line with the Friendship Bridge on the Yalu (Amrokgang). International trains run on this route from Pyongyang to Beijing or Moscow . Kim Jong-il liked to ride her on his Royal Train whenever he visited China or Russia. Before 1945 it was part of the Gyeongui Line , Seoul - Sinuiju Railway .
history
Before 1945
On April 3, 1906, the Gyeongui Line was fully opened. Sinuiju Station, the last station, moved to the present location on November 1, 1911 and was connected to Andong ( Dandong ). International trains ran from Busan to Fengtian ( Shenyang ) or Beijing via this route in the 1930s and 1940s .
The railway line Namsi (Yŏmju) -Sinuiju belonged to the private railway and was operated by the Tasado-Tetsudou Aktiengesellschaft. The construction was finished in 1940:
route | opening | length | comment |
---|---|---|---|
Sinuiju - Yangsi (Ryongch'ŏn) - Tasado Harbor | October 31, 1939 | 39.5 km | The Ryongch'ŏn - Tasado Port railway is currently the Tasado Line . |
Yangsi - Namsi (Yŏmju) | October 29, 1940 | 18.5 km |
From April 1, 1943, it became the Yangsi Line, a state railway . On October 16, 1943, the route changed to Sinuiju South – Namsi, because the South Station became a common station with the Gyeongui Line.
After 1945
After the establishment of the Korean State Railways , the Gyeonui Line in North Korea was divided into the P'yŏngui and P'yŏngbu – lines. So far the whole route has been electrified. Before the end of World War II , the Gyeongui Line was double-tracked, but it was rebuilt as a single-track line due to destruction during the Korean War . The old Yangsi line united in the main railway line Pyongyang-Sinŭiju; thus the previous route Namsi (Yŏmju) –Sinuiju South was separated from one another and called the Paengma Line . In addition, the new line in Pyongyang was expanded, so the entire length of the line was about 12 km shorter than in 1945. On April 22, 2004, the serious railway accident occurred in Ryongch'ŏn station.
