The Duden Library , Office library until August 2010 and PC library up to version 3 , is a proprietary computer program that contains many electronic reference works of the Bibliographisches Institut & FA Brockhaus (Brockhaus, Duden , Meyer) ("BIFAB") and Langenscheidt - Publisher is based. In addition, the office library (or the previous version compatible with it, see below) is also used for the lexicon of religious education of the Neukirchener Verlag and for the Römpp chemistry lexicon of the Thieme publishing group . New Zealand's Reed Publishing also uses the Duden library.

While the software itself is free to download, the reference books that can be used with it must be purchased.

Since September 2010, the software, updated to version 5.1, has been available for download as a Duden library and is also supplied on CD-ROMs with Duden books.

The current version 6 cannot integrate all previous reference works.

development

The Duden library - like most of the rest of the software for Brockhaus-Duden Neue Medien GmbH - is being developed at the Institute for Information and Communication Technologies (formerly Institute for Hypermedia Systems) of Joanneum Research in Graz , Austria . The Qt library is used for programming , which means that multiple operating systems can be supported at the same time.

The Duden library was originally presented in October 2003 as a new development only for Linux and macOS , while users of Mac OS and Windows had long before the even more extensive software PC library . Both software products work with the same database format , so that most of the titles in the PC library also work under the Duden library. As a rule of thumb, many version 2 texts and (almost?) All version 3 titles are supported. However, there is a special situation with some of the titles from Langenscheidt-Verlag. Since version 4.0 of the Duden library achieved the same range of functions as the PC library in January 2005 , it has now also been offered for Windows as a successor product to the PC library. The further development of the PC library has been discontinued. A version of the Duden library for Intel Macs has also been available since summer 2006 . The PC library is therefore only required for older operating systems ( Windows 3.x with the PC library version 2, Windows 9x and Mac OS 9 and later), as well as for the few texts not supported by the Duden library.

Since August 2007 the new version 5.0 has been available for download. It is the first largely error-free version of this software, which was unusually immature in the previous versions. As in version 4, the interface has been further developed. You can now quickly define your own book selections and thus specifically refer to reference works. This means that reference works can be accessed specifically in self-compiled groups (e.g. only foreign dictionaries or lexicons).

However, version 5 - and this also applies to the 5.0.1 update released at the beginning of November 2007 - has so far only been offered in the express version. This is a functionally reduced variant that was originally only enclosed in Duden volumes, in which the database is also supplied on CD-ROM. With the update to version 5.0, on the one hand, a largely error-free product is available for the first time (see, however, also the next section), on the other hand, an update means a restriction of the functional scope. For example, there is no direct search, with the help of which you could search for specific words directly from any application without calling up the program interface of the Duden library.

Since August 2010, version 5.1 has also changed the name to the Duden library . Most office, PC library and Langenscheidt e-dictionary databases are compatible with the new version. Older dictionaries such as B. Meyer's politics and some Langenscheidt dictionaries report an error during installation.

Version 5.2.1 was released in August 2013. for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and various Linux versions.

The publisher has been offering version 6.1 on its support page since October 2015. As of version 6.0 from autumn 2014, the databases are available in the new DBB format, so that the existing databases can only be partially imported. Generally Duden dictionaries can be adopted more recently (for example , the origin of the dictionary in the 4th and 5th edition of 2007 and 2014 or German spelling 25/26. Edition 2009/2013). Other reference works such as those by Langenscheidt can no longer be integrated.

Functionality

There are numerous ways to work in all installed books at the same time. Among other things, keyword search , full text search , similarity search or a search with logically linked terms are available. You can create user dictionaries, set bookmarks and add comments.

Because the Duden library - unlike many comparable products - does not use multimedia effects, it still runs sufficiently quickly on older computers.

The program interface of the Duden library does not adhere to the established guidelines of the respective operating systems, but is presented with its own navigation concept. This has to be learned first. The keyword search, which has been changed in version 5, makes opening a keyword very cumbersome. The attempt to open a keyword found via the keyword search does not lead to the goal in many cases, but triggers a new full text search. The first hit of this full text search is then opened automatically. In many cases it is not the intended keyword, so that the keyword that has actually already been selected for opening has to be selected again in the results of the full-text search.

A problem solution by editing the Officebib.ini - which inexperienced users could be overwhelming - is described in a blog entry. Under Mac OS X, the text file "de.office-bibliothek.plist" (or "com.yourcompany.Duden-Bibliothek.plist" in version 5.2.1) in the "Library / Preferences" directory must be modified in the same way. The default value "4" in the line DefaultOptions \ ImplicitMaxIncremental must be set to e.g. B. "40" can be increased. This measure can also prevent sudden program crashes that occur when entering individual keywords (in connection with certain dictionaries). Under SuseLinux the file "office-bibliothek.ini" is in the user directory under .config / BDNM.

In the newer software version (from 6.0) this behavior can be changed directly in the program by deactivating the entry Relevance-rated hit list under the menu item View - Settings - General .
