The ED74 series is a series of four-part electric railcars operated by the Polish State Railways (PKP).
In 2006, PESA in ( Bydgoszcz ) received the order from Przewozy Regionalne to build eleven 16WEk railcars. This is a further development of the type 16WE, one of which was built as a four-part ED74-01, but shortly afterwards it was shortened to a three-part railcar and called the ED59-01 . The railcars were intended for use as a passenger train between Warsaw and Gdansk . Financing is provided by the European Regional Development Fund .
The four car parts are connected to one another by Jakobs bogies . Compared to the prototype, the head shape was changed, and a compartment in the first class with 21 seats was provided.
The ED74, built in 2007 and 2008, were used for PKP Intercity between Warsaw and Łódź .
modernization
PKP Intercity has started modernizing all 14 ED74 vehicles. The tender is divided into several stages. In the first phase, interested contractors must submit an application for admission to participate in the procedure. If they meet certain conditions, they are invited to a technical dialogue and can then submit an offer. The contractor will be selected in the second half of 2018. After the contract is signed, the contractor has 48 months to complete the entire contract. The first units should already run with guests on board in the 2020/21 timetable.
After the modernization, the vehicles of the ED74 series show some improvements, new seats and sockets will be installed, and WiFi will be installed. A bistro or the like, however, will still not exist. In addition, the modernization aims to improve the efficiency of the vehicles.
PKP Intercity wants to use the trains on the Wrocław - Lublin and Kraków - Lublin routes. All trains run under the InterCity (IC) category. Maintenance will take place in Wrocław.
