The PL-01 is a light main battle tank with stealth technology , which was designed by the Polish company OBRUM in cooperation with BAE Systems . The concept vehicle was presented on September 3, 2013 at the International Defense Industry Exhibition (MSPO, Międzynarodowy Salon Przemysłu Obronnego).

history

The PL-01 was designed by OBRUM, which belongs to Poland Defense Holdings (PDH) , in cooperation with BAE Systems and is classified as a Direct Support Vehicle (DSV) by the company.

The development of the PL-01 is closely related to the plans of the Polish Armed Forces to purchase a Universal Modular Tracked Platform (UMPG) (general modular tracked vehicle platform). The planned variants of the UMPG include DSV, command vehicle , reconnaissance and mine clearance tanks .

The future of the DSV, and thus of the PL-01, depends on the 4th Defense Competition , which is held by the Polish National Center of Research and Development (NCBR). The NCBR, the executive body of the Polish Ministry of Research, is responsible for developing a strategic development program. One of these programs is a 42-month program beginning in 2013, at the end of which a DSV in prototype status is to be implemented.

In order to reduce development time and costs, the Polish Ministry of Defense requested that an existing chassis be used. Obrum and BAE Systems decided to use the chassis of the CV90 AFV manufactured by BAE System .

technology

The PL-01 has a crew of three men ( commander , gunner , driver) and has a fully automatic, self-loading 120 mm smoothbore cannon in an unmanned turret. The rate of fire will be at least six rounds per minute. Alternatively, a 105 mm smoothbore cannon can be installed, which is intended for potential export customers. Two drum magazines with space for 12 to 16 grenades are provided in the tower, which can automatically load the cannon. Optionally, the PL-01 can carry an additional 26 rounds or take four infantrymen. In addition, the PL-01 is equipped with a remotely controlled 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade cannon.

The PL-01 was designed with a variety of bevels to reduce its radar signature. In the outer armor, cooled panes are used, which should enable the tank to protect against stealth . Using this technology, the PL-01 is said to adopt the infrared signature of its surroundings in order to irritate enemy weapons that use infrared tracking.

As armor, the PL-01 has composite armor and additional armor in bulkhead construction , in accordance with the STANAG 4569 Level V standard. This means that the PL-01 can fend off projectiles up to 40 mm in the front area. The sides of the PL-01 have armor according to level IV. Active armor can be attached.
