POC21 was an innovation camp that took place from August 15, 2015 to September 20, 2015 in the Chateau de Millemont near Paris . The aim of the POC21 innovation camp was to bring 100 makers , designers and innovators together in 5 weeks to develop a proof of concept of a sustainable society. The innovation camp was a unique get-together on this scale. In this accelerator program, 12 open source hardware projects from the areas of energy, living, eating, mobility and communication were developed.

The POC21 innovation camp was a German - French cooperation between the Berlin collective Open State and the French network for the promotion of cooperative projects OuiShare .

The principles

The POC21 innovation camp was supposed to bring the startup world, DIY scene and environmental protection together and show concrete solutions for the fight against climate change. The basic principles of the POC21 Innovation Camp were derived from Sustainable Design , Open Source and Zero Waste .

The structure

In addition to pure technology development, the POC21 Innovation Camp focused on creative processes such as individual session formats or rituals. These creative processes included a. Workshops , keynotes , mentor discussions (with Bruce Sterling and Michel Bauwens from the P2P Foundation , among others ), reality checks with external experts from business and science and regular retrospectives. The 12 projects were able to fall back on the knowledge and experience of a total of 200 trainers, marketing experts, product developers, designers and programmers to further develop their product in the 5 weeks.

The POC21 innovation camp was a temporary municipality . In the 5 weeks a prototype for a sustainable society was developed. Concepts such as coworking , co-living , the principle of consensus and lack of hierarchy were taken up and implemented.

The infrastructure in the Chateau de Millemont included self-built showers and a kitchen , composting toilets and a tent camp. In the FabLab , high-tech tools such as 3D printers , laser cutters and CNC machines were available. The camp served as a prototype for a local mini-factory.

The camp was financed (budget: 1 million euros) 40 percent each by companies and foundations, 20 percent came from public grants.

The 12 projects

  • $ 30 Wind Turbine: Inexpensive wind turbine made from recycled materials
  • Aker: kits for urban horticulture
  • Kitchen B: Kitchen modules to reduce waste and save energy
  • Bicitractor: Pedal-driven tractor as a fuel-free alternative to expensive tractors from large-scale industry
  • Faircap: inexpensive water filter for common beverage bottles
  • Nautile: an energy-saving kettle
  • Open Energy Monitor: Device for visualizing and monitoring domestic energy consumption
  • Myfood: permaculture system
  • SolarOSE: Solar concentrator for the production of thermal energy
  • Showerloop: water- filtering circulating shower to save water and energy
  • Sunzilla: modular and easily transportable solar generators
  • Velo M2: versatile modules for cargo bikes

All 12 prototypes can be recreated, further developed and distributed using an open source blueprint.

Media coverage

From November 30th to December 12th 2015 the UN climate conference COP21 took place in Paris . The POC21 innovation camp saw itself as a grassroots movement complementary to political narrative. As a result, POC21 received a lot of attention in the international media. In France in particular, there was a great response to the project because of the thematic and temporal proximity to COP21. There were also numerous media reports in Germany.

The project documentation premiered on November 29, 2015 in the Babylon cinema in Berlin and is available online.
