Coordinates: 42 ° 20 ′ 14.4 ″  N , 9 ° 30 ′ 3 ″  E Santa Cristina is a chapel in the commune of Valle-di-Campoloro near Cervione in the north of the French island of Corsica .

history

It was built in pre-Romanesque times in the 9th century. It was partially demolished in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century by Benedictine monks from the island of Montecristo . The chapel is distinguished by its twin apses and frescoes from 1473. It is classified as a monument historique . It was extensively restored between 2007 and 2010.

Interior

In the chapel there are colorful frescoes with religious motifs. Among them stands out the representation of Christ Pantocrator ( German  "Christ, the ruler of the world" ), who wrote a font with the text Ego Sum Lux Mundi Et Via Veritas ( German  "I am the light of the world, the way and the truth" ) in holding hands. You can also see the crucified Jesus in front of the walls of Jerusalem in the presence of the Virgin Mary , St. John and Mary Magdalene . Furthermore, there are an Annunciation Angel , the Apostle Bartolomäus , Archangel Gabriel and Archangel Michael , Saint Margaret of Antioch , Saint Bernardine of Siena , Saint Sebastian , Saint Anthony , John the Baptist , Saint Hippolytus and Saint Christopher who the Carrying baby Jesus in a water rich in fish, pictured. Next to it is Saint Christina of Bolsena . The chapel is consecrated to you and Hippolytus.

Literary reception

The chapel owes its fame to the French writer Prosper Mérimée , who also held the post of chief French monument protector (“Inspecteur des monuments historiques de France”). He visited her on his trip to Corsica, about which he wrote the book Notes d'un Voyage en Corse , which appeared in 1840.
