POLYGIS were two different geographic information systems for the hybrid processing of geo-referenced factual data, raster data without cut-offs and vector data that is true to coordinates. The programs have functions for analysis, evaluation and processing of information.

Temporal and market classification

POLYGIS , which dealt in particular with the management of spatial information from infrastructures such as roads, supply and disposal networks, land and buildings, had 16,450 jobs (16,500 worldwide) with 1,100 customers (1,135 worldwide) in the German-speaking countries in the Professional GIS category. has a market share of 12% and thus ranked third in 2006.

The name POLYGIS is a registered trademark of the Ingenieurgesellschaft für angewandte Computertechnik (IAC) mbH Leipzig , against which the Leipzig District Court opened insolvency proceedings on January 13, 2014 due to insolvency and overindebtedness . The name POLYGIS has not been used since the IAC ceased business in December 2013 .

history

"Old" POLYGIS

POLYGIS emerged from a development of the CAD / CAM center in the combine Polygraph Leipzig in cooperation with the VEB Robotron Electronics Dresden and the Technical University Leipzig (THL). THL began developing the CAD program GEDIT / M16 in 1987 , which Polygraph has been developing since 1988. This resulted in the CAD program PolyCAD in 1988 , consisting of the parts PolyCON (2D construction module ), PolyDAT (project planning module ) and PolyNC ( NC interface). On March 1, 1990, former employees of the CAD / CAM center founded the IAC and since 1991 they have started developing POLYGIS from within PolyCAD .

The first version of POLYGIS , which still ran under DOS , was brought onto the market in 1992 by the IAC. In 1993 POLYGIS 3.0 appeared under Windows 3.11 . From 1996 to 2009 there was a cooperation between the IAC and the software office Lothar Bubel (SWBB) GmbH in Kirkel, Saarland . Up to version 9.9, POLYGIS was a classic desktop application based on Delphi . Up to this version, SWBB was the developer, author and owner of the rights to use the software and application framework, and IAC was only the owner of the brand name POLYGIS . Due to different ideas about the future development of the program, IAC and CAIGOS GmbH ended their cooperation.

The company SWBB changed its name to Caigos GmbH in November 2009 and has been selling the old POLYGIS since August 1, 2010 under the new name CAIGOS and developing it further. Caigos GmbH has been a subsidiary of the IDS Group since 2011 .

"New" POLYGIS

Since the end of the cooperation between IAC and CAIGOS GmbH also ended IAC's rights of use to the old program code, IAC entered into a partnership with the software company Intergraph Germany in September 2009 . The aim was to jointly develop a new program called POLYGIS 10 .

IAC and Intergraph tried to establish a completely web-based GIS solution with Java Smart Client based on the GIS component GeoMedia Smart Client (formerly ResPublica ) from Intergraph by summer 2011 , but this was only rudimentary. The program POLYGIS 10 should manage factual and geometric data together in standardized databases according to the open OGC standards.

In the meantime, all rights to the POLYGIS brand name have been transferred back to CAIGOS GmbH, a company of the IDS Group , as part of the IAC's insolvency proceedings .

Data formats

POLYGIS as well as CAIGOS and GeoMedia Smart Client Kommunal can process raster and topographic maps, land maps, site plans or aerial photos and vector data , which are stored in the form of coordinates, together with the relevant factual data linked to the graphic data via references.

The programs know the following formats:

Raster formats

Vector formats

  • DXF
  • AtlasGIS (BNA)
  • ArcInfo / ArcView ( Shape )
  • MapInfo (TAB and MIF )
  • SICAD (SQD)
  • EDBS
  • BGRUND
  • POLYGIS metafile (PMF, used up to POLYGIS 9.9)

Industry models

Specialist models were named in POLYGIS specialty applications that contain ready- made tables for certain areas of activity (e.g. management of district heating pipes). They should relieve the user of a large part of the workload. They offer further subject-specific functionalities that go beyond the standard functions of POLYGIS . All industry models were integrated into the system, with POLYGIS forming the core of this solution. POLYGIS 10 provided the following specialist shells: Green, ALKIS ( official real estate cadastre information system ), sewer, traffic signs, small sewage treatment plants, tree, KOMSTAT (municipal statistics), water, street cleaning, gas, KSIB (municipal street information bank), XPlaning, heat, indirect discharger, electricity.

The data exchange with other programs took place via standardized interfaces such as XML , official interfaces, but also standard formats such as DXF and DWG .

application areas

  • municipal administrations
  • Supply and disposal companies
  • Engineering offices, planning authorities
  • Land registry offices
