Paasselkä (formerly Paasivesi ) is an oval-shaped lake in an eroded impact crater in South Savo in Finland is. The lake forms part of the Orivesi , which in turn is part of the Saimaa lake system. In contrast to the other lakes in the region, Paasselkä is characterized by the lack of islands. It is unusually deep and reaches a maximum water depth of 75 m.

Impact crater

The Paasselkä impact occurred in the Triassic approximately 228.7 ± 3 million years ago. The diameter is about 10 km.

An anomaly in the Earth's magnetic field provided further evidence of a possible impact crater. In 1999 a deep borehole finally led to the detection of the ninth known impact crater in Finland. In contrast to other Finnish impact craters, this one was not covered by layers of sediment.

Light phenomena

Light phenomena often occur at the lake, which can possibly be linked to the local magnetic anomaly.
