Pablo Echenique Robba (born August 28, 1978 in Rosario , Argentina ) is a Spanish and Argentinian (he has both nationalities ) scientist and politician . Since the 2014 European elections he has been a member of the European Parliament for the political organization Podemos .

Life

Pablo Echenique was born in Rosario (Argentina) in 1978 . When he was 13 years old, he moved to Spain with his mother Irma and sister Analía. The family settled in Saragossa . Echenique has suffered from spinal muscular atrophy , a hereditary and degenerative disease , since early childhood . As a result of this illness he is 88% disabled , so that he is mobile as a wheelchair user . Described in his own words: "I have little strength, I can move everything, but only a little". His disability was one of the reasons his family emigrated to Spain in search of better opportunities.

Echenique graduated in physics in 2002 and received his PhD four years later from the University of Zaragoza . With a post-doctoral fellowship, he conducted research at the Institute for Bioinformatics and Physics of Complex Systems ( Instituto de Biocomputación y Física de Sistemas Complejos ) at the University of Zaragoza. In 2008 he received the Romper Barreras (Breaking Barriers) Prize for adapting his office at the university. Since 2009 he has been a titular scientist and researcher at the CSIC at the Institute for Physical Chemistry Rocasolano . He is also an associate member of the theoretical physics department at the University of Zaragoza.

Together with Raúl Gay, he writes the blog De retrones y hombres (Of disabled people and people) in eldiario.es , in which they try to break the stereotypes about the world of disability (the term retrón is a neologism shaped by echenique and gay to denote disabled people, although Echenique also uses the word «cascao» (German: kaputt) to denote himself). One of his blog posts, Discapacitado y más feliz que tú ... sí, que tú (Disabled and happier than you ..., yes, than you) won the 2014 Tiflos Journalism Prize in the digital journalism category, a Prize of the National Organization of the Spanish Blind People (ONCE). The jury emphasized that “the protagonist becomes the voice of the network, with a novel statement that allows him to take a new perspective, which fuels the debate, stimulates discussions, and initiates reflection, with a direct and passionate language”.

On August 9, 2012, he married his former fellow student from the doctoral program, the Venezuelan María Alejandra (Mariale) Nelo Bazán.

In January 2014, after the Podemos had crystallized , Pablo Echenique got involved in the new party by forming the “Podemos Disability Circle” ( Círculo Discapacidad ), as well as with his candidacy in the primaries to create the list for the 2014 European elections in Spain. Echenique was the candidate with the fourth-best voting result in these primary elections, and ended up in fifth position because it had previously been agreed that men and women would alternate when filling the list.

As a result of the European elections, Podemos achieved five seats in parliament, so that Pablo Echenique was elected MEP. He stated that disability and science will be his focus.

Echenique came under political pressure in 2016 because of an illegal employment affair.
