Pachygaster atra is a fly fromthe weapon fly family (Stratiomyidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 3 to 4 millimeters. Their body is dull black in color and has a short, thick abdomen. The body surface is dense, roughly structured in point form. The antennae of the males are black, the females are yellow-red. The compound eyes are close together in the male. The wings are darkened at the base, their radial artery is forked. The swinging bulbs ( holders ) are brown, the tarsi , splints ( tibia ) and the part of the thighs ( femora ) further away from the body is colored yellow. The species can be confused with some very similar species in the genus Stratiomys .
Occurrence and way of life
The species is widespread in Europe. One finds the imagines in July in large numbers on the outskirts of lowland forests while visiting parsley family . The larvae develop in rotten dead wood, such as elms .
