The longitudinally striped thick jaw spider ( Pachygnatha clercki ) or Clerck's extensor spider is a species of spider from the family of the extensor spider (Tetragnathidae, also called pine spider or thick jaw spider) native to Central Europe .
description
The females reach a body length of 5 to 6, the male about 5 millimeters. The dark, red-brown prosoma (front body) is clearly distinguished from the round opisthosoma (rear body), whose orange-brown, whitish basic tone is marked with a clearly recognizable, darker olive-green to dark-brown folium (leaf pattern). The legs are yellowish brown without pattern. The particularly strongly toothed chelicerae are striking , as are the two front pairs of legs, which are significantly longer than the two rear ones. However, Pachygnatha clercki does not have the elongated body shape of the actual extensor spider ( Tetragnatha ).
distribution and habitat
The longitudinally striped thick jaw spider is widespread in Central Europe and usually not rare. It inhabits densely vegetated banks and wet or marsh meadows, as well as flat bogs and swamp forests.
Way of life
Only the young build nets to catch prey, while the adult animals move on to a netless and hunting way of life in adulthood and like hunting spiders roam on the ground and in the vegetation. The species is diurnal.
Reproduction
During mating, the male and his chelicerae embrace those of the female in order to prevent a subsequent feeding attack. The inconspicuous egg cocoon is attached to leaves and stems.
