Paco Ignacio Taibo II (born Francisco Ignacio Taibo Mahojo in Gijón January 11, 1949 ) is a Mexican author.

Life

2014 in Bochum

Taibo, the son of the author and intellectual Paco Ignacio Taibo I (1924–2008), moved to Mexico in 1957 with his parents. There he studied literature, sociology and history. Before he could establish himself as an author, Taibo worked as a journalist, university lecturer and non-fiction author. He became politicized in the bloodily suppressed student movement of 1968. His reaction to the massacre was permanent opposition. Together with his wife Paloma, he is still connected to the protest movements in Mexico in solidarity.

Taibo II is considered to be the founder of the new Latin American crime novel, which combines the stylistic devices of the adventure novel, political thriller and crime fiction with overflowing imagination and often grim humor. He became known worldwide through the figure of the first deceased and then resurrected independent detective Héctor Belascoarán Shayne, who conducts investigations in the urban jungle of Mexico City that repeatedly lead him into a swamp of corruption and political repression. But he is also recognizable as an eminently political author. His crime novels often contain historical and political references. They are often set in politically explosive situations, such as in the chaotic 1920s in Mexico or in the run-up to the Spanish civil war , and they contain clear, often socially critical references to everyday life in Mexico.

As a historian he has u. a. distinguished by the biographies of Ernesto Che Guevara and Pancho Villa. In his work around Che Guevara , he rediscovered his stay in Africa, which is described in detail in The Year We Were Nowhere .

Taibo II is co-founder of the International Association of Crime Writers (AIEP) and organizer of the Semana Negra, an annual international crime festival in Gijón, Spain.
