Palácio das Cinzas (2018)

The Palácio das Cinzas ( German  Aschenpalast , English Palace of Ashes ) is the former official seat of the President of East Timor . The building is located in Suco Caicoli on Rua Palácio das Cinzas (formerly part of Rua de Caicoli ). As the official seat of the head of state, it was replaced in 2009 by the Palácio Presidente Nicolau Lobato . Today the Ministry of Health is located in the Palácio das Cinzas .

During the Indonesian occupation, the building served as a police station and vehicle registration office. The building was burned down in the wave of violence caused by the Indonesian Operation Donner in 1999. Only the walls remained. The name "Ash Palace" pays homage to the East Timorese liberation struggle. In the roofless ruin, only individual rooms were set up, such as the office of the president. It was not until much later that the building was renovated and rebuilt.
