Chotek Palace

history

The palace was built between 1871 and 1874 by Lothar Abel for Otto Graf Chotek (1816–1898) as an elongated, one-story, strictly historical building in the style of the New Vienna Renaissance. The palace was later extended and from 1891 rented to the company Friedrich Otto Schmidt , a studio for antique home furnishings, which acquired it in 1904 as the permanent company headquarters. The company was one of the leading furniture designers of the early days and worked with many well-known artists, including Adolf Loos . In 1945 the palace was badly damaged, but restored in the following years.

description

The facade of the palace is structured by a two-axis central and two side projections. The high French windows of the bel étage with console cornices and segmented or triangular gable roofing rise above a banded basement with a cranked cornice . The windows on the top floor are accentuated by sill cornices and grave stones. A parapet parapet, interrupted in places by balusters, completes the facade. In the base zone, two side portals, flanked by fluted pilasters with volutes, lead into the driveway. From there a staircase with a marble balustrade leads to the first floor. The dining room is still equipped with original paneling and wooden coffered ceiling from the Friedrich Otto Schmidt company. The former garden is almost completely built in and the side wings serve as workshops.
