The Palais Lieben-Auspitz is a Viennese palace in the 1st district of Vienna, Innere Stadt , at Universitätsring 4, known as the location of the Café Landtmann and the legendary salon of Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps .

history

It was built on behalf of the siblings Leopold, Adolf , Helene, Richard and Ida Lieben and their cousin and Helene's husband Rudolf Auspitz by the architects Carl Schumann and Ludwig Tischler from 1873 to 1874 in the historicist style. At that time, a large part of Vienna's Ringstrasse was still under construction: when the building was put into operation, neither the main building of the University of Vienna , which is now adjacent, nor the new Burgtheater building existed .

The well-known Café Landtmann is located on the ground floor . Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps organized her literary salon in this house (entrance Oppolzergasse 6). Leopold Lieben moved into the first floor in 1888 and furnished it in the Rococo style. He was the father of the physicist Robert von Lieben .

Leopold Lieben's daughter, Robert's sister Valerie, also lived in the house with her husband Johann Paul Karplus , a doctor. Their grandson Martin Karplus , who lives in the United States , was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2013.
