In 1861 he qualified as a professor in organic chemistry at the University of Vienna.

In 1865 he worked at the University of Palermo and in 1867 at the University of Turin , in 1871 he taught at the University of Prague . From 1875 to 1906 Lieben was a full university professor and head of the Second Chemical University Laboratory at the University of Vienna.

Lieben became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the scientific academies of Rome , Munich and Berlin from 1879 onwards . In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1903 he received the Commander's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order with the star and was Commander of the French Legion of Honor . In the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna - the university's hall of fame - there has been a bust of Liebens, created by Carl Kundmann , since 1922 . As part of “purges” by the National Socialists in early November 1938, ten sculptures by Jewish or supposedly Jewish professors in the arcade courtyard were overturned or smeared with paint in connection with the “ Langemarck Celebration ”. At this point in time, the acting rector Fritz Knoll had the Arkadenhof sculptures checked; on his instructions, fifteen monuments were removed and placed in a depot, including that of Adolf Lieben. After the end of the war, all damaged and removed monuments were put back in the arcade courtyard in 1947.

Another bust is in the Faculty of Chemistry in Vienna.

meaning

Adolf Lieben was a pioneering researcher in the field of organic chemistry , which mainly made use of synthetic methods. He discovered the Liebensche iodoform reaction named after him and founded a direction in organic chemistry in Austria based on the theory of atomic chaining . Lieben made studies on the constitution and synthesis of alcohols, aldehydes, acids and hydrocarbons, and also on the condensation of aldehydes to aldols. His most important student was Carl Auer von Welsbach . Together with his friend, the chemist Ludwig Barth zu Barthenau , he founded the monthly magazine for chemistry .
